Josquin’s Intabulations

In the last few months, I have been doing research to start writing my Master Thesis.

The general theme I have chosen is about intabulations for lute and vihuela on music by Josquin des Prez.

Although I am in an initial phase, I wanted to share in a Post format some information that may be relevant for guitarists, vihuelistas or lutenists.

After reading this post, maybe some of you will feel motivated to play one of the intabulations presented. Since as you will see “La canción del Emperador” (Mille regretz) by Luis de Narvaéz is not the only intabulation by Josquin available these days. Neither is it the only setting based on that chanson.

In order to build a proper background, I first tried to find as many intabulations on Josquin des Prez’s music as possible. Specifically, those that were made for lute and vihuela during the Renaissance.

For this purpose, I made a research in the main sources of that time and also in the bibliography available today.

As a result, I have found more than sixty pieces of sacred and profane music by Josquin des Prez.

The list is not finished, but I think it is a good starting point.

Below is the file with a list of intabulations found in publications and manuscripts for lute and vihuela during the 16th century.
